CONTINUED EXPLORATIONS

This past month was all about continuing my exploration of new colors, different styles,

new mark making tools and techniques.

The images which I’ve included this month will highlight some of the things I’ve tried.

Please let me know which ones you like, and which ones “not so much”.

A few of the “Face Lift” paintings (mentioned in last month’s newsletter)

will be showcased in July.

In this first image I was exploring a more traditional style landscape using

heavy body acrylic (which I rarely use). Lots of layers build the forms

with only a small amount of negative shape painting.

Definition: negative space is the space around

an object not the object itself.

This photo shows a far different style of landscape!

In this painting I am exploring a more abstracted version of a landscape.

It incorporates a non-traditional color palette, highly stylized shapes,

and carbon pencil marks for additional structure.

The photo above shows the color palette used for

the abstract landscape and also the

pink floral with turquoise background below.

This small floral was created by dabbing paint with a damp

paper towel for the flowers and then using

negative space painting to find the overall design.

A great way to turn “traditional” subject matter into a

“non-traditional” painting!

Can you spot the differences!

Exploring abstract expressionism has been really fun!

The freedom of this style is what makes it enjoyable, but

it also makes it one of the most difficult to bring

to a successfully completed painting—at least for me.

The two sheets of 6 images are just getting started,

there is much more that can be done.

Each new mark adds more energy and complexity.

My goal is to build the design without it devolving into total chaos!

I know this newsletter was quite different from my previous ones.

I hope you have enjoyed seeing these playful explorations.
