Kim Collins - Biography

Kim Collins

Bio

Fort Worth, TX artist Kim Collins is currently working in contemporary mixed media, print making, and collage. Although not a native Texan, Kim has lived in the Fort Worth area for almost 50 years. She decided to become a full time artist in 2013 after exhibiting in several galleries and winning awards in the North Texas area. Nature-based themes have been Collins’ primary influence—from realistic watercolors in the early years to more abstract designs in her current work. She has studied monoprint and collage online with various international teachers since 2023.

Statement

Sometimes you just need a change—something to reignite the creative spark. My current work is about that need and where it led me in my art. During a 12 week online class I tried some mixed media/collage. It was not something I thought would be my “thing”, but I absolutely loved it! As they say, “the rest is history”. All of the artwork I’ve done in the last couple of years feature my newfound love of collage and gel plate monoprinting. The prints came about because I wanted to use my own papers in my collage work along with the “found” papers I also use. My themes are still very much nature based, although abstracts are becoming more numerous.

I’m interested in the depiction of layered history or memory and the idea of wholeness from fragments. Collage is a perfect example of using fragments and disparate bits to create a newly imagined and distinctive work.
